Why engineered floorboards?

Engineered floorboards are the latest technology in timber flooring, combining a real hard timber surface layer with multi-plywood sub-layers of thinly cut hardwood and softwood plantation timbers.  These multi-plywood layers are glued in multiple directions provide superior strength, rigidity, and stability of the top layer of solid timber.  The result is a superior strength floor board:

  • That can typically be made wider and longer than solid boards,

  • Has the same or thicker "wear" (sanding layer) than solid floor boards,

  • That predominantly consists of plantation timbers which is positive for our environment,

  • Is more affordable as more planks can be produced from hardwood sources, and

  • Is more resistant to moisture effects.

The benefits of European Oak

European Oak (also known as "French Oak") is a high density timber providing superior strength and wear properties.  It can be cut accurately, drilled and glued making it easier to work with.  See this article on Why Engineered European Oak flooring?

Floorboard Grading Definitions

ABC Grade or Select Grade

ABC grade flooring shows more character than AB grade and can display some knots, more variations in colour and texture, some mineral streaking and grain pattern. In ABC grade flooring you can expect knots of up to 20mm in diameter, flashes of colour, burrs and other character marks. Boards can display few small black knots and delicate machinery defects. During the kiln drying process knots crack slightly, which are filled with a mixture of sawdust and resin after initial sanding, but before sealing.

ABC-D Grade or Natural Grade

ABC-D grade flooring contains vibrant colourful patterns, knots of varying sizes up to 50mm and more colour variation. Coloured wood filler is used to fill in the larger knots, which allows for a more even finish and giving an attractive look. Natural grade floors are popular choice for feature and character.

CD or Rustic Grade

CD grade wood offers the greatest colour and grain variation of all real wood boards. This grade can contain knots up to 50mm in size and presents a more rustic timber appearance. CD grade timber uses wood fillers to give a more even finish and offers the widest variance between planks and gives the floor the most natural appearance.

Installation of engineered floorboards is easy

installation instructions for floating floor

Installation of these floorboards is easier than you think.  They can be installed as a floating floor over suitable underlay, or installed using the direct stick (glued down) method.  Preparation and having the right tools is the key.  The tongue and groove system ensures your floor boards are accurately installed.  We recommend joins are glued with a flexible premium hardwood PVA adhesive.

Download the Moku Floorboard Installation Instructions - they are important to ensure your floating floor is installed properly and covered fully by the warranty.
